Tomislav Merčep

Tomislav Merčep (28 September 1952 – 16 November 2020) was a Croatian politician, convicted war criminal and paramilitary. He was active during the Croatian War of Independence. He was born in Vukovar, Croatia. He was a member of the Croatian Democratic Union. He was a member of the Croatian Parliament from 1993 to 2000.

Merčep unsuccessfully ran for President of Croatia in 2000 presidential elections.

In May 2016 Merčep was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison for failure to prevent the murder of 43 Serb civilians in Pakračka Poljana and other locations, committed by members of the unit under his command.[1]

Merčep died after a long illness on 16 November 2020, aged 68.[2]
